A great career…interrupted

"I had a great career going until 45. Then a restructuring forced a break. Then I joined a role that never really fit. And now I am sitting here wondering if I can still make a significant change."

A client said this to me .
I could hear the weight in it.
Not just the question. The years behind the question.

The version of herself that had moved through her career with momentum and confidence and a clear sense of where she was going.
And then the moment that interrupted all of it.

Not a failure. Not a bad decision. A restructuring. Something that happened to her, not because of her.
And yet somehow, over the years that followed, it had quietly become the story she told herself about who she was.

I asked her: "When you say you had a great career until 45, what did that actually look like?"
She started talking. And as she talked, I noticed something.
The energy changed.
Because the career she described was not the career of someone who had peaked. It was the career of someone who had been interrupted.

There is a difference. A significant one.
A peak means the best is behind you.
An interruption means the thread is still there. It just got tangled.

The role that did not fit was not evidence that she could not find the right one. It was evidence that she had accepted something out of fear when she should have chosen with intention. Which is a completely human response to uncertainty.

The break was not a gap. It was a chapter. One that, when framed properly, showed resilience, adaptability, and the ability to navigate the kind of disruption that is now happening to entire industries.

So can she make a significant change now?
Not only can she. She is better positioned for it than she realises.
Because she has something that the 35 year old version of herself did not have.
The lived experience of knowing exactly what does not work for her. And the clarity, hard won through difficult years, of what she actually needs from the next chapter.

That knowledge, when it is excavated properly and built into a deliberate strategy, is not a liability.
It is the most valuable thing she owns.
